What does cancellation mean anymore? Over the past year we’ve seen a lot of animated programs get yanked out of retirement to resume their normal business like nothing happened: Futurama, The Proud Family, Phineas and Ferb, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Powerpuff Girls and Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head. Now Judge’s other famous cartoon has been granted a second chance as well.
There were rumblings of a King of the Hill revival in 2021, via stories spread by Hollywood writer Brent Forrester on Reddit. Forrester claimed “The characters have all aged 15 years” in the new version. There is no indication that is what this is; it seems to be a simple restart of the proverbial pickup truck. Pamela Adlon is still listed as playing Bobby and, were this the future, his voice would have changed.
In fact, nearly everyone is back: Mike Judge (Hank Hill and Boomhauer), Kathy Najimy (Peggy Hill), Stephen Root (Bill Dautrieve), Johnny Hardwick (Dale Gribble), Ashley Gardner (Nancy Hicks-Gribble) and Lauren Tom (Minh and Connie Souphanousenphone). The only absent cast member is Brittany Murphy (Luanne Platter), who has a valid reason to not come to work.
Oh wait — there’s no mention of Toby Huss either. But he played Kahn in the original run, and he wasn’t Asian, so that’s likely something they’re looking to avoid. Perhaps we’ll hear about a new actor for Kahn around the same time we hear who’s playing Luanne.
Judge and longtime partner Greg Daniels will be at the helm again, but they’ll be joined by Saladin Patterson, who’s been involved in a number of things, most recently ABC’s new Wonder Years show.
“Yeah, man I tell you whot man, that dang Ol’ Greg, talking about ‘O.G.’ and then that Mike Judge … Inspirations, man … the original show, dang ol’ classic … Got my kids, man, walking around talking about ‘That’s my purse! I don’t know you!’ Feeling blessed, man, I tell you whot ‘Feel so Good’ is a great song, I don’t care what no-dang-body says …” said Patterson.
The press release does not mention how many episodes have been ordered or when we could start seeing them. But the return of King of the Hill is headed for Hulu.
