The Emperor’s New Groove is one of those Disney films that isn’t necessarily a movie of its era. Neither a classic fairy tale musical like the 90’s films that came before, but also not a more mature action film like the 00’s movies that followed it. What would have been a musical epic called Kingdom of the Sun evolved into a fun and hip self aware comedy. Quite the swerve, but hey, 25 years later, it remains a generally well loved film.
Directed by Mark Dindal, The Emperor’s New Groove is the story of an arrogant and narcissistic Emperor Kuzco (David Spade) who is turned into a llama thanks to the machinations of Yzma (Eartha Kitt) and Kronk (Patrick Warburton) and must learn humility through the friendship of Pacha (John Goodman) to regain his throne. The Emperor’s New Groove was released in theatres on December 10, 2000.
Like most animated Disney movies, The Emperor’s New Groove has had its various releases (most recently a Blu-ray in 2013) and is available to watch on Disney+, but this is the first time it’s coming out as a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. While we don’t know what special features it will include, it is a two-disc set. It will be available digitally on Tuesday December 9th. Prior to that, the movie will be shown at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre and have a run from November 21st to the 24th for Los Angeles-adjacent fans.
The Emperor’s New Groove may not have quite the legacy as some other Disney films. It
underperformed at the box office and racked up more award nominations than actual wins. But it’s nothing to sleep on. It got a direct to video sequel, Kronk’s New Groove, in 2005. Although that was more like three episodes of what looked like a Kronk TV show strung together to resemble a movie. An actual TV series, The Emperor’s New School, premiered in 2006 and ran for 52 episodes. Most of the film’s original voice actors reprised their roles (although J.P. Manoux took over the role of Kuzco from David Spade).
But nothing’s topped the original so far. So get ready to pull the lever and groove along with Kuzco again.
