A Transformers/G.I. Joe Crossover Animated Series Is Currently In Development

    GI Joe and Transformers are two of the most iconic toy lines and two of the most iconic cartoon series of the 1980s. Transformers has become one of the most successful franchises Hasbro has ever created, spawning several successful animated TV shows, video games, comics and live-action movies. Although G.I. Joe has not been nearly as successful as Transformers, it’s certainly one of the most successful franchises created by Hasbro, maybe only behind Transformers and My Little Ponies.

    Transformers and GI Joe crossovers go back to the 80’s comics

    Now there is news that a crossover animated series between G.I. Joe and Transformers aimed at adults is in the works. Hasbro is teaming up with Skybound Entertainment (which produces the current Transformers and GI Joe comic books) to create this new crossover series. The series will be based on a comic from Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead and Invincible (both of which have been made into TV series). This animated series is titled The Energon Universe.

    The Energon Universe will also feature Void Rivals, a new creation of Robert Kirkman created at Skybound Entertainment with Lorenzo De Felici after he acquired the G.I. Joe and Transformers comics license in 2023. Void Rivals featured characters Darak and Solila, who are forced to work together during a war between their alien species. Joe Henderson, the showrunner for the TV show Lucifer, will be the showrunner for The Energon Universe. It’s been reported that The Energon Universe will have the same sensibilities as Kirkman’s other famous animated series aimed at adults, Invincible.

    This announcement comes more than 2 years after the movie, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”, teased a live-action crossover between G.I. Joe and Transformers. It has been reported that the live-action crossover between Transformers and G.I. Joe has been stalled, so perhaps this animated series has been created to meet the potential demand for this crossover. Regardless, it will be interesting to see these two iconic franchises interact in animation.
