Moomin Characters and Annapurna announced today that they will be teaming up on a Moomins feature film that will be directed and written by Rebecca Sugar, best known as the creator of the Cartoon Network series Steven Universe. This won’t be the Moomins’ first movie, but it will be the first that is produced in the U.S. Julia Pistor, who’s previous credits include the first SpongeBob movie and all three Rugrats movies at Nickelodeon, will serve as producer.

The Moomins were created by Finnish artist and writer Tove Jansson during WWII. The Moomins (who are not to be confused with hippos) are gentle trolls who live in Moominvalley, a magical place where adventures are always waiting around the corner, sometimes taking them away from home. Jansson wrote a total of nine books between 1945 and 1970.

The Moomins books have been published in more than 60 languages, including English, with TV adaptations that have been seen in 120 countries. A Moomin comic strip was also drawn by Jansson and later her brother Lars and was syndicated in 40 countries.

At the moment, no plot details or any sort of release plan, including a date and platform/format, have been made available.
