Someone who isn’t Brad Bird has been given the job of directing Pixar’s Incredibles 3. This headline might cause some initial fretting, but actually, it’s not as bad as it sounds.
Bird has tapped in Peter Sohn to direct the third film about the Parr family, now under development at Pixar. Sohn’s previous directing work has been for The Good Dinosaur in 2015 and Elemental in 2023. Good Dinosaur has a reputation as the sleepiest, most forgotten Pixar film of all, but Elemental didn’t turn out that bad. Admittedly, it wasn’t Incredibles 1-level.
So is there reason to worry? Not so fast. Bird and Sohn have been together a long time, and the former has served as a mentor to the latter. Sohn has worked on every Pixar film Bird has been involved with, including Ratatouille and both Incredibles films. Sohn would know the inner workings of how an Incredibles flick is supposed to function, better than anyone besides Bird. This passing of the baton must indicate Bird believes Sohn is ready.
The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the story, theorizes the handoff may be due to Bird’s packed schedule. He’s currently working on a movie called Ray Gunn for Skydance and a different film for Disney called 1906 (presumably about the San Francisco earthquake of that year).
Also, Bird is not completely divorced from this production — he’s still heavily involved. He’s the one writing the script! He’s also still the producer, alongside Dana Murray (Pixar’s Soul).
Incredibles 3 was announced last August at the D23 presentation. No plot details were given then, and we still don’t have any now. Nor do we have a release window in the Disney movie schedule — it’s still a long way off. Pixar’s next feature is Elio, due out in less than two weeks, followed by Toy Story 5 and Hoppers.
