It’s True: Batman Is About To Meet Deadpool

Remember when Marvel and DC could collaborate and do cool crossover events where Superman met Spider-Man and such? It’s too bad both companies are now owned by giant rival movie studios; we’ll never see the like again…OR WILL WE…

Against all odds, a new crossover is now in the works between the Disney and WB properties: Batman/Deadpool. Or Deadpool/Batman, depending on who’s printing. The event will be two issues in length, with Marvel’s creative team handling the first issue and DC’s team creating the second. Zeb Wells and Greg Capullo are writing and drawing Deadpool/Batman respectively, while Grant Morrison and Dan Mora will write and draw Batman/Deadpool.

“I don’t do many comics these days but there was no way I could turn down the chance to work with Dan Mora again, one of my all-time favorite artistic collaborators—and definitely no way I could turn down Batman and Deadpool!” Morrison told Entertainment Weekly, who broke the story. “Expect 4th wall-busting mayhem, owls, blood, blades, and at least one giant typewriter!”

“After writing Amazing Spider-Man for 60 issues, I told Marvel I needed a break,” Wells said. “Marvel told me I could do that or I could write a comic starring Deadpool and Batman with the best Batman artist of our generation. I no longer needed a break. In Batman we’ve found someone who has even less time for Deadpool’s antics than Wolverine, but a city-wide threat from the Joker makes strange bedfellows (literally, if Deadpool had his way). It’s been a blast letting Deadpool loose in Gotham City and watching what happens.”

Rumors were flying months ago that DC and Marvel had again agreed to work on a crossover comic, and it’s a bit of a letdown that it’s just TWO characters. Then again the “every superhero from one company meets another one” event has been done TWICE, first with DC Versus Marvel in 1996 and then with JLA / Avengers in 2003. I suppose they didn’t want to retread the same ground, even if there are some new characters from the last twenty years that have never gotten the chance to leap the fence.

If you want to see what the original inter-company crossovers were like, DC Versus Marvel got a new omnibus reprint late last year. JLA / Avengers also got one the year before, but in very limited quantities, as a way of honoring artist George Perez in his final months on this planet. It’s possible the discussions over those reprints led to this new crossover event.

Also, the Big Two are hinting and winking that it might NOT be just Deadpool and Batman that meet…the comics will have backup stories, with “other exciting Marvel and DC character match-ups.” And something else may be in the works for 2026, they both say.

Marvel’s Deadpool/Batman hits the streets first on September 17, while DC’s wrap-up Batman/Deadpool will follow at an undisclosed time in November.
