Comic Strip Macanudo To Become TV Series

Mercury Filmworks has announced they’re currently developing an animated series based on the Argentinian comic strip Macanudo, created by cartoonist Ricardo Liniers Siri, who signs as Liniers. King Features Syndicate, who translates and distributes the strip in the US, is co-producing alongside Mercury in Canada and Sun Creature in France.

The premise of Macanudo is that two children living in Nuevo Aires, Henrietta and Martincito, possess imaginations so powerful that it gives them the special ability to see the invisible, magical world underlying the lives of children everywhere. This power is called “Macanudo,” giving the strip its name. In its native country, the strip is super popular and has been printed in over 50 books.

“We are lucky to partner with an amazing cartoonist like Liniers to develop this beloved comic property beyond print and into entertainment,” said C.J. Kettler, President of King Features. “The extraordinarily talented team – including Andrea Fernandez, Mercury Filmworks and Sun Creature Studio – will bring Macanudo: The Series to life, making audiences worldwide fall in love with its fanciful characters and finding wonder in everyday moments of life.”

Never heard of Macanudo? That’s okay. I barely know of it, and I know way more about the modern newspaper comic strip business than any healthy Millennial should. For example there’s currently a months-long cross-dimension hopping sci-fi storyline happening in Crabgrass, and THIS was yesterday’s Mary Worth, no exaggeration or editing on my part:

Yeah, that thing’s getting weird.

Macanudo may never get as weird as Mary Worth but the premise could take it to some wild places. The art and premise remind us a lot of Hilda, and if it can get anywhere close to what Hilda was like it could be grand. Andrea Fernandez, who worked on The Cuphead Show among other things, serves as the showrunner and director here.

“Macanudo is a singular piece of storytelling — poetic, philosophical, and full of joy — and it presents a rare opportunity to create a series that resonates as deeply with adults as it does with kids,” said Clint Eland, CEO of Mercury Filmworks. “We’re thrilled to partner with Sun Creature and King Features to bring Liniers’ whimsical world to life through animation, and to introduce a whole new generation to the quiet magic that Macanudo offers.”

No word on when we could see Macanudo spring to life, but it’s very early. The series will be fishing for partners and a potential network or streamer at Annecy next month.
