Netflix Pursuing Possible Clash Of Clans Cartoon

Netflix just can’t get enough animated video game adaptions. They already have Castlevania, Tomb Raider, Sonic Prime, Cyberpunk Edgerunners and Devil May Cry, and soon they’ll be adding to that Splinter Cell and…Clash of Clans?

Yes, for better or worse, they’ve decided to go mobile for this next one. The series will be made in arrangement with Supercell Games, who has been pushing for an adaption of their flagship strategy title. The plot will involve “a determined, but in over his head, Barbarian who must rally a band of misfits to defend their village and navigate the comically absurd politics of war.”

Fletcher Moules, who directed a series of Clash of Clans shorts on YouTube, has been made showrunner for this larger adaption. Ron Weiner, who has written for 30 Rock, Futurama and Arrested Development, will lead script production. The show’s animation will be handed by ICON Creative Studio in Vancouver BC.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Netflix and this creative team to bring the world of Clash to life,” said Curtis Lelash, Head of Film & TV at Supercell. “Think epic battles, immaculate Barbarian mustaches, and the kind of humor our players know and love.. They’ve been asking for a Clash series forever, and we’re beyond excited to finally say: it’s happening!”

Clash Of Clans has been around since 2012, and its battle royale variant called — what else — Clash Royale was introduced in 2016. Together they make up one of the most downloaded phone games of all time, but…that doesn’t necessarily translate into eyeballs for a TV series. Not all games are built equal.

Part of this might be my own personal taste – mobile games are too shallow and money-grubbing to be fun — but also, I’ve observed mobile games don’t have the rabid, devoted fanbases that console or PC games do, no matter what Mr. Lelash claims. That being said, not many video game adaptions these days are aiming for flat-out comedy, and Clash of Clans could be different enough in that vein to connect with people who don’t care about the game.

Much is unknown at this time, like who is starring or what it will be called (it could be just simply Clash if they want to incorporate both games). When Clash clashes with Netflix in the distant future, we’ll bring you more info.
