Disney Releases First Zootopia 2 Trailer

Some Disney sequels make more sense than others. We’re still skeptical the world needs a Toy Story 5, but we WOULD like to spend more time in the animal menagerie metropolis that is Zootopia, and we’ll get to do just that when Zootopia 2 comes out this November.

When we first met rabbit officer Judy Hopps, she had just moved to the big city and was looking forward to tacking big cases, but found herself stuck on parking duty. She should’ve been careful what she wished for, as the biggest case ever falls directly in her lap, and forces her to work with con artist Nick Wilde — a fox, she loathes foxes! — to unravel a conspiracy.

I feel like there’s been a lack of originality in trailers lately, but Zootopia 2‘s restores my hope. There are no actual clips from the film in here — it’s Judy, Nick and a new character (Gary DeSnake) pantomiming a rough interpretation of what the plot will be about, to the rhythm of EDM rave music. This, at least to me, sells the film very well.

We’ll avoid any spoilers for how the first film ended and just say Judy and Nick are working together on a new case. What Nick was to Judy in the previous story, Gary will be to them both. Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman are back to voice the main characters, and Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) plays Gary. All the other actors are back where applicable — yes, even Shakira.

“We are beyond excited to welcome everyone back to the outrageous, expansive animal metropolis of Zootopia, and take audiences on a hilarious, wild ride into parts of the city we’ve never visited before,” said Jared Bush, the film’s director and writer as well as Chief Creative Officer of WDAS. “Whether it’s the marshes of semi-aquatic mammals, the vast desert dunes or even greater mysteries beyond, our heroes, Judy and Nick, will meet a lot of new friends, and discover even more about the world, themselves and a brand-new snake in town.”

Co-director Byron Howard informed the press who the little guys are at the beginning: “The trailer features the original song ‘ZUTU’ by Zootopia’s finest lemming techno group, LEMEEENS. Fresh from touring with superstar Gazelle as her opening act, members Hans-Peter, Gūnther, Spielt and their DJ, Spaß, created the song to mark the occasion and welcome the world back to the City of Zootopia!”

Zootopia 2 opens in theaters this Thanksgiving, November 26.
