Avengers: Doomsday is closer than ever. With Captain America: Brave New World fresh in everyone’s minds and both Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps on the horizon, Marvel wants to remind audiences that they are setting up another huge crossover movie with their fifth Avengers film set to be released in 2026.
Through a series of social media posts and videos (which totaled five and a half hours in length), Marvel announced a whopping 27 cast members for Avengers: Doomsday (which will be the first Avengers movie since 2019’s Avengers End Game).
Last year’s big news about Avengers: Doomsday was that Robert Downey Jr., who kicked off the MCU as Tony Stark/Iron Man, would be returning to the franchise as Dr. Doom. Joining him are returning Avengers Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man). Then there are Avengers allies, Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Simu Liu (Shang Chi), Danny Ramirez (Falcon) and Winston Duke (M’Baku) plus wild cards Tenoch Huerta Mejía (Namor) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki).
Naturally, casts from the two newest MCU teams, The Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four, will also be appearing. That includes Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Wyatt Russell (U.S. Agent), Florence Pugh (Black Widow), Lewis Pullman (Sentry), David Harbour (Red Guardian), and Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost) from Thunderbolts*. Representing The Fantastic Four are Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing), and Joseph Quinn (The Human Torch).
If that weren’t enough, we’ve got old school, pre-X-Men: Days of Future Past reboot X-Men! Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Channing Tatum (Gambit) have all been confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday. While it might be disappointing to some that we aren’t seeing any of the newer, younger, X-Men, this shouldn’t be a surprise. Patrick Stewart reprised his role as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Kelsey Grammer cameo’d in The Marvels‘ post-credit scene.
Now, this doesn’t mean anyone not named won’t be appearing in the movie. Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), and Brie Larsen (Captain Marvel), who you’d expect to appear, weren’t even mentioned, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be in the movie. None of the Guardians of the Galaxy were mentioned, and neither was Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Fans are wondering about Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, especially considering the fact that Channing Tatum’s Gambit, who was introduced in Deadpool & Wolverine, will be in Avengers: Doomsday. Also, a few notable female X-Men are absent. Personally, this reporter is curious about whether or not we’ll see Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr. Strange (who is probably more familiar with the Multiverse than any of these characters except Loki), and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, who found herself in a reality featuring the X-Men when last we saw her. Also, are we getting any villains other than Dr. Doom? Not that I’m one to complain that a movie with Doom, Loki, and Magneto is lacking bad guys, but I’m seeing a lot of heroes and anti-heroes but not much in the way of true villains.
With this kind of buzz and two new Marvel movies coming out over the next few months, there is plenty to speculate on who will be in this new Avengers movie and what will happen. Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, is set to be released by Marvel Studios in May 2026 with Avengers: Secret Wars coming out a year later in May 2027.
