Netflix Orders Scooby-Doo Live-Action Series

They said they were going to do it, and now they have. After hinting a few months ago they were in talks with Warner Bros to produce a live-action take on Scooby-Doo, Netflix has followed through with an official series order. Barring any mid-production buyer’s remorse, this is happening.

The title of the project is unknown, but it’s early. We do know they’re going for an “origin” premise, where the Scooby Gang is younger and meeting each other for the first time. The first season will take place at summer camp, where “old friends Shaggy and Daphne” discover a Great Dane puppy “that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder.” Shortly after that fateful meeting, “pragmatic and scientific townie” Velma and “strange, but ever so handsome new kid” Freddy join the team.

Past continuities have hinted Shaggy and Scooby first met as children, but the precise age of these characters probably won’t be revealed until we find out who’s playing them. Everyone sounds young in this, but how young? If they really are kids, well, Netflix should know from experience that kids grow. They’re gonna have to put these seasons together a lot faster than they did with Stranger Things.

“Mystery, Inc. is back in business! We’re excited to bring Scooby-Doo to TV as a live-action series for the first time,” says Peter Freidlander, VP of Scripted Series at Netflix. “The beloved franchise has had an impact on pop culture that is undeniable — it’s rich with universal themes of friendship that generations of fans have long embraced. Together with creative powerhouses Berlanti Productions and Midnight Radio, we’re committed to delighting longtime fans and opening up a world of groovy adventures for a new era of meddling kids.”

Will this latest toon-to-reality conversion be a One Piece of a hit or a Bebop of a flop? ..Or an “it’s okay, I guess” Last Airbender kind of thing? We’ll find out eventually, but not for a while. Netflix’s Scooby Doo currently has no release date.
