Toonami April Schedule Update

Toonami’s official Faceboook page has released the schedule for April 5, 2025. The debut of Lazarus at midnight is the primary change.

FLCL Shoegaze wraps up on March 29, leaving an opening for Lazarus at 12:00. FLCL Grunge  and FLCL Shoegaze have been holding down the midnight since the conclusion of Mashle. The recent breakup of the Pillows may have played a role in the decision to rerun the most recent two FLCL sequels.

Lazarus is among Toonami’s most anticipated originals. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, the creator of three of Toonami’s best anime: Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Space Dandy. Trailers have featured jazzy soundtracks and fluid action reminiscent of Cowboy Bebop. While Toonami originals like Uzumaki have often received mixed reception for their animation quality and pacing, Lazarus has potential to be the best received Toonami original anime.

Common Side Effects continues to hold down its 12:30 AM slot. These episodes are new to Toonami, but they are airing on a month delay from Sundays. Interestingly, the first two shows on the block both focus on miracle drugs. Common Side Effects is an Adult Swim original series about Marshall, a man who discovers mushrooms with healing properties and is pursued by DEA agents and pharmaceutical companies. Meanwhile, Lazarus focuses on a scientist named Dr Skinner, who invents a miracle drug in 2052, then reveals in 2055 that everyone who takes the drug will die three and a half years later. The series will involve the search to find Dr Skinner and invent a cure.

Blue Exorcist is continuing its run at 1 AM. Currently it is entering the final arc of season one, which is an anime only arc ignored by later seasons. It remains to be seen if Toonami will license seasons 2-4, which have aired in Japan, but not Toonami. This is Blue Exorcist’s second run on Toonami, a decade after its first run in 2014.

One Piece retains a full hour from 1:30-2:30 AM. Last weekend featured the return to present day battles after two months of flashbacks, but the end of the Dressrosa saga is still months away, with 36 episodes remaining. While the dub has finally caught up to Japan due to the hiatus, Toonami is still ten years behind.

Naruto remains at 2:30 AM as the Zabuza arc continues to air episodes skipped by Toonami Rewind. Season 2 episodes of Naruto are now being uploaded on Friday nights to Adult Swim on demand, so Naruto should be holding down this slot for months to come.

Sailor Moon wraps up the block at 3:30, with reruns of the first season. Season one fully aired on Toonami Rewind, and a second run began on Saturdays shortly after the cancellation of the Friday afternoon Rewind block. With Dragon Ball Z Kai having recently left the block after episode 47, Sailor Moon and Naruto are the two survivors of Toonami Rewind.

Toonami faces competition from the new anime.com hour on axs. Will you be watching Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works and My Hero Academia on Saturday nights or Lazarus and Common Side Effects?
