TBS Is Not Renewing American Dad; Show Returning To Fox

Given the state of TBS recently, this is an announcement we’ve been expecting for a long time. I predicted it months ago, but here it is in black and white: after the season finale of American Dad airs next Monday, the cable network will not be renewing the series.

An official statement from TBS doesn’t seem to be available, but the website TV Line broke the news and seems confident. TBS has become a ghost town for original content — American Dad was the last holdout and only survived this long because a two-season renewal was locked down just prior to the Discovery takeover. Zaslav reportedly asked the show’s producers if he could buy out the new contract. They turned him down.

As for where American Dad goes from here, when this newspost originally went up we didn’t know, but reports are now coming in that the show will be returning to the Fox lineup starting with the next season. The deal, reportedly, is a multi-season renewal.  American Dad has performed consistently in ratings for twenty solid years, still attracts a devoted fanbase, and its library is one of the most watched animated series on Hulu.

Though the show has drifted quite a bit from the Bush-era satire it started as, American Dad is still about Stan Smith, the square-jawed, ultra-patriotic CIA agent and family man who is rarely ever seen without his suit and tie. His family members include his politically opposite daughter Hayley, her husband Jeff, his nerdy son Steve, and his scatterbrained wife Francine. Plus, two very Seth MacFarlane additions: Roger, a self-centered alien who wears disguises to roleplay as a ton of characters, and Klaus, a German man who had his brain transplanted into a goldfish’s body.

This is a weird formula, admittedly, but it’s been one good enough to generate 388 episodes and more to come in the future. We have a feeling that it’ll be another wonderful day.
