If it seems nothing is truly dead anymore in Hollywood, here’s some definitive proof. Today during The Walt Disney Company’s annual meeting of shareholders, Pixar announced a sequel to Coco is in the works.
The 2017 film is highly regarded as one of the finest creations of Pixar’s modern age, as well as one of its most emotional. It follows Miguel, a 12-year-old boy with a passion for music that is discouraged by his family. Seeking answers, he winds up in the Land of the Dead and discovers the real story behind his family history. (Coco also originally opened with that really long Olaf cartoon…remember that whole fiasco?)
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” CEO Bob Iger told the crowd. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.” Lee Unkrich, the director of the first Coco as well as Toy Story 3, will return to direct the Coco sequel alongside its co-director Adrian Molina. Mark Nielsen (Toy Story 4, Inside Out 2) has been tapped as producer.
The major hurdle with a Coco 2 is…well…there’s no Coco. Spoiler alert: Grandma Coco died at the end of the first film. We realize the movie’s very premise opens the door for her to return as a skeleton, but that would kind of ruin her character.
Pixar said once that this film had no finalized title for the longest time (they were going to go with “Dia De Los Muertos” at one point, but then discovered you can’t trademark a Mexican holiday as a Disney brand). They settled on “Coco” because she was the emotional core of the story. But how do you make her the emotional core of TWO stories after the arc surrounding her has been resolved? This is something the Pixar writers are going to have to figure out, and hopefully they can.
If all goes well, Disney anticipates they can bring Coco 2 to theaters in 2029.
