The biggest advantage streaming holds over linear television is the ability to watch whatever you want, whenever you want, on your own schedule instead of the TV’s. But, as streamers have discovered, there are folks who just prefer the TV making their viewing decisions for them…and so they’ve introduced 24/7 streaming channels within their services, devoted to a specific show or genre.
The latest to get its own channel is The Simpsons, and we should have seen this coming. With the largest library of any American-produced cartoon by far, The Simpsons is well-suited to entertain audiences for weeks on end without repeating itself (just ask the cable channel FXX, which is kinda made redundant by this).
“From day one, the fans have asked for a Stream of The Simpsons, and we’re happy to oblige,” said Gabe Lewis, SVP of Programming & Content Curation, Disney+. “Streams on Disney+ have been a fantastic go-to experience for subscribers looking to sit back and relax with their favorite shows and movies, and we look forward to evolving the user experience and expanding the offering with more Streams, to more subscribers, later this year.”
Matt Selman, showrunner for the current season, added, “The Simpsons Stream will deliver a Simpsons marathon all day, every day — no matter when you tune in, this ultimate Simpsons binge will be there.”
The 24-hour Simpsons stream launches today from the Disney+ homepage and will run through every season the streamer has rights to in chronological order — that’s Seasons 1-35, or 767 times the Simpson family runs to their couch only for something weird to happen. Season 36 currently runs on Hulu and linear episodes premiere on Fox.
But if you assume a basic stream is all it is, maybe not. Disney mentions that after the series cycles through all its episodes, the content “will be refreshed monthly,” which could mean different themed assortments. Perhaps in October the stream will be every Treehouse of Horror over and over (which would still take a while).
You should be able to find the Simpsons Channel on the Disney+ homepage, or if it disappears in the future, within the streamer’s Simpsons Collection section.
