Probably the most shocking piece of anime news ever has ever broken out. CBS and Paramount Plus have been complete non factors in the anime streaming wars, with no anime content at all on that streaming service. Deadline has just reported that CBS Studios will create a live action adaptation of the 2000s battle shonen series Claymore.
The series will be executive produced by Masi Oka, the same executive producer behind the controversial adaptation of Death Note. Although it has not been absolutely confirmed where this will air or stream, CBS tends to keep their special effects heavy television shows on Paramount Plus rather than their linear network, so this being a Paramount Plus series is the safest bet. It appears that this show is in the very early stages of development as no other details have been divulged.
Claymore was a Monthly Shonen Jump/Jump Square manga that received an anime adaptation in 2007. It received an English dub and DVD release in 2008-2009. Unlike other popular Shonen Jump titles like Naruto or Bleach, Claymore is a little bit less famous and never got the benefit of a cable airing. It is currently streaming on Crunchyroll, but be warned that this title is very graphic despite being based on a teen targeted manga.
Crunchyroll’s official synopsis:
“Man-eating monsters-the Yoma-stalk the land. The breed knows only one foe: Claymore. Human-Yoma hybrids of strength and cunning, these warrior women roam from fight to fight delivering salvation by the edge of a blade-for a fee. This is the tale of the Claymore called Clare. In a land where even predator is prey, her solitary path to vengeance unfolds.”
This will be uncharted territory for CBS Studios as they’ve mostly focused on their current IPs (Star Trek, Yellowstone, Sonic, Nickelodeon) or grounded drama series like Tulsa King. Could this somehow end up like Netflix’s live action One Piece and be a major hit with anime fans.
