Surprise — Kevin Conroy Is In The Devil May Cry Anime

Netflix released another trailer for the upcoming Devil May Cry anime, from the creators of their Castlevania shows, this week. Some fans felt that a voice heard early on in this new footage felt familiar. They were right: Kevin Conroy is in the cast, playing a character named VP Baines.

Not an imitation, not an AI (despite rumors)…they’ve publicly confirmed this really is Conroy’s voice! That means production on the series must’ve gone underway quite a while ago: Conroy passed in late 2022. What a cool surprise to get one more performance from him!

The previous trailer was set to Limp Bizkit; this time the soundtrack is Last Resort by Papa Roach (and it’s even credited). You might be detecting a pattern here, and that’s intentional. Showrunner Asi Shankar has stated the Devil May Cry anime “is set in a late ’90s/early 2000s PS2 era of the world. It’s not set in modern times. It’s set in my memory of the world, pre- and post-9/11.”

“My music choices reflect this. My series features a mix of hits from that era and greatest musical hits from the DMC franchise reimagined by [synthwave duo Power Glove].” Power Glove never composed music for DMC, but they have contributed to video games (Far Cry 3 features their work).

The Devil May Cry anime is based on the Capcom series. Shankar has been involved with other Netflix game adaptions, like Castlevania and that bizarre Captain Laserhawk show that was a satirical mix of Ubisoft properties. Like the games, the anime will follow Dante the demon hunter as he leaps, somersaults, and performs lots of other acrobatic moves while firing his guns at monsters. Dante is searching for the one who killed his mother, but he doesn’t seem THAT broken up about his loss.

Devil May Cry, Conroy and all, launches on Netflix April 3.
