Shrek Discovers He’s An Internet All-Star In First Teaser For Fifth Movie

You know you’ve hit it big as an iconic cartoon character when you get your own set of memes. Homer has walking backwards into the bush, Fry has “Shut Up And Take My Money,” Spongebob has “I WANT IT,” and Shrek has too many to count.

For a character and world so wired into pop culture, it makes sense that the first thing we’d see from Shrek in years is his own commentary on his memeness. Having just stepped out of retirement, he’s discovering this stuff for the first time, and he’s more than a bit unnerved.

This is the first teaser for Shrek 5. Donkey, Fiona, and Pinocchio are all there and don’t seem to have aged a day…but there is one new member and one visible sign of time’s progress. Remember those “Shrek babies” that were more disturbing than anything a meme could cook up? They’re not babies anymore. We get to see the first of them in this teaser…

The shaggy brown-haired ogress is Felicia, voiced by Zendaya, who will be playing a major part in Shrek 5. The teaser holds its breath in anticipation of this announcement, as if Zendaya being in this movie wasn’t completely 100 percent expected by everyone. Dreamworks has not yet revealed what Shrek’s other two offspring, Fergus and Farkle, look like now or who’s playing them…but one of ’em’s gotta be Awkwafina, right?

Shrek 5 was officially announced last July, with the reveal that all three main actors — Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz — had been convinced to return, a minor miracle for Diaz who was considered retired from acting. Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn are directing the feature. Serving as producers are Gina Shay and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri, who I guess isn’t too busy.

Shrek 5 is due out December 23, 2026 — a delay from its original targeted date of July 1, 2026.
