Moana 2 made a mint for Disney in the theaters, so one would get why the company would drag its feet a bit on making it streamable. It’s finally happening, though — Disney admitted the Polynesian princess is coming home in about two weeks.
And we really mean “home.” Moana 2 started life as an intended Disney+ miniseries. It was never announced in this form, but partway through development someone decided the story they had would make for a better movie than a show. This reporter personally hasn’t seen Moana 2 yet but have had multiple people tell him it is “mid.” Evidently the critics don’t agree — Moana 2’s Rotten Tomatoes score stands at a respectable 83 percent.
The first Moana remains one of Disney+ most streamed modern offerings, and a big part of its appeal comes from the killer soundtrack created by Lin Manuel Miranda. He did not return for Moana 2 — instead the songs were written by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, who are best known for “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical,” a bootleg adaption of the popular period piece that ended up winning a Grammy and launching their careers. Who says fan works are a waste of time?
Moana 2 reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
Moana 2 stars the voices of Auli’i Cravalho as the title character and Dwayne Johnson as Maui, plus Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, David Fane, Hualālai Chung and Rose Matafeo. It was directed by David Derrick Jr, Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller. Look for it on Disney+ March 12, as a palette cleanser after the latest ultra-grim episode of Daredevil: Born Again.
