Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim Lands On Max February 28

Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim

If you didn’t see Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim during its theatrical run…you’re in good company. The anime LOTR prequel didn’t pull in very impressive numbers, but it wasn’t expected to. The film’s real purpose was to prevent WB’s Tolkien license from expiring by producing a theatrical movie within a certain time limit.

A lot of you were probably waiting for The War Of The Rohirrim to show up on streaming, and you’ll get that wish granted very soon. WB just announced the movie will make its debut on Max within a week, on Friday, February 28.

Based on a tale from one of the LOTR appendices, War Of The Rohirrim focuses on Princess Hèra Hammerhand as she is about to face betrothal to a nobleman she doesn’t like. That sounds like a familiar setup, but just wait. Not only does her father King Helm Hammerhand share her disgust for the man, he punches him so hard that he dies! Helm was the original One Punch Man.

That act makes the man’s son, Wulf, so mad he declares war on the kingdom of Rohan. Now Hèra must lead the resistance and take down Wulf’s forces. Famed LOTR trilogy director Peter Jackson does have a credit on this feature, but only as a producer. Primarily, this is an anime film directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Eden Of The East).

Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim stars the voices of Lorraine Ashbourne (Bridgerton), Yazdan Qafouri (I Came By), Benjamin Wainwright (World On Fire), Laurence Ubong Williams (Gateway), Shaun Dooley (The Witcher), Michael Wildman (Fast And Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), Jude Akuwudike (Beasts Of No Nation), Bilal Hasna (Sparks) and Janine Duvitski (Benidorm).

Tolkien’s world first entered cinema through the medium of animation; this is the first time it has returned. Who did it better: Bakshi or Kamiyama? Find out for yourself at the end of February.
