If you’ve ever thought Sucker Punch’s epic Ghost Of Tsushima game would make a good anime, Sony thought so as well. They’ve just announced a deal with Aniplex and their own Crunchyroll to produce an animated series based on a portion of the game (we’ll get to which portion in a minute…it’s not the part you think).
The Ghost of Tsushima anime will be helmed by director Takanobu Mizuno, with Gen Urobuchi (NITRO PLUS) handling story composition and KAMIKAZE DOUGA contracted for animation. Synergizing things further, Sony Music will create the anime’s soundtrack and score in-house.
“Having already proven the immense quality and versatility of our gaming properties across multiple successful film and television projects, we couldn’t be more excited to announce our first ever anime adaptation,” said Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions. “Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project, and Aniplex is the perfect partner to translate Sucker Punch Productions’ hit video game into a stunning new anime series.”
Even though the single-player campaign in Ghost of Tsushima has a lot of rich lore to pull from, the anime won’t be an adaption of this. Instead it is reportedly based on the game’s co-op mode, which doesn’t really have a story. What gives there?
Perhaps someone already called dibs on the meatier parts of the game. A Ghost of Tsushima feature film was already announced last year, and it will take its story from the game, which probably means it was off-limits for the anime. On the brighter side, adapting something with no story means you get to make up your own, so there’ll be more creative freedom with this project.
The Ghost Of Tsushima co-op anime is only just entering production and won’t be completed for another two years. Which will we have by 2027: this show, or Sucker Punch’s sequel Ghost of Yotei? Let’s find out.
