As many many websites have reported, yes, Batman made an appearance in last week’s episode of Creature Commandos. This is significant because Creature Commandos is the very first piece of media from the Gunnverse (what we’ve all decided to call James Gunn’s new DC Cinematic Universe) and this would make the first appearance of a character that is inevitably going to get his own live-action movie.
But.
The thing about this Batman appearance is that it’s rather small in comparison to other first-time appearances that have happened on Creature Commandos thus far. It’s literally small too — the screenshot above is about it, a momentary image that displays for one second. It’s a silhouette of Batman that doesn’t contain much detail, and you can’t gather much from it. According to Gunn, this was by design.
“When they first showed the episode to me, there was a lot more Batman,” Gunn reportedly said in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes. “And I said, “I’m not ready to commit to that…more silhouette!” This means he’s probably still deciding who his Batman even is.
So what do we really know about Batman from this? Nothing. I find it curious this show has also displayed momentary images of both Superman and Wonder Woman, in the daylight, and neither appearance got much press, but this is probably due to the fact it came from a vision from Circe in which they were dead and violently crucified — not the kinda thing Variety wanted to show its readers for breakfast.
What Creature Commandos HAS shown in great detail is Clayface, who gets a minor role in Episode 5. And this is significant because Clayface is getting his own movie! It’s technically as significant as Batman! Judging by that one appearance alone, though, it’s hard to believe this lecherous, gluttinous jerk is a character meant to carry a motion picture in 2026 (we also found out he plays XBox in his spare time, which is fine). We’ll see how that plays out.
Creature Commandos has one more episode to go, and thus one more chance to tell us anything about the oncoming DCU, but Thursday won’t mark the end of the show. A second season was confirmed two weeks ago, and is in production now.
