The Wild Robot Becomes Streamable January 24

Dreamworks’ The Wild Robot had a successful run in theaters and a blockbuster launch on digital and disc. The only thing left is to debut on streaming somewhere. Universal announced today the film will premiere on their own service, Peacock, on January 24.

If you’re one of the millions who don’t get Peacock, no need to worry….Universal’s animated films have a tendency to show up on Netflix a few months after they show up on Peacock. We can’t promise this for The Wild Robot, but it’s happened to every single other Dreamworks and Illumination picture so it’s very likely.

The Wild Robot was directed by Chris Sanders, probably Dreamworks’ most valuable employee, who directed the How To Train Your Dragon movies (and before that, Lilo and Stitch for Disney). The wild robot of the title is Roz, built to serve man, who is delivered to the wrong location and doesn’t know it. She boots up for the first time in the middle of the wilderness, and is soon running around asking random animals if they need help. There’s one that does: a small goose, because it just hatched and thinks Roz is its mother. She wasn’t programmed to be a parent.

The movie used a new digital painting technique to create 3D environments without the need for texture mapping. “They found a way to paint dimensionally. There is no geometry in the [environments.],” Sanders said in an interview. “We needed the hand-painted look everywhere. Not just in the sky, but on the ground and in the trees, in bushes and flowers and everything. So that’s what they did.”

Sanders did speak of a potential sequel to The Wild Robot last October, shortly after the first film’s release and success. “100% yes, there are absolutely plans for a second one,” Sanders told reporters. However it may be a while before we hear anything more about it.

The Wild Robot is based on a book by Peter Brown, but takes a few liberties in the adaption. There are several volumes in that series; the first sequel is called The Wild Robot Escapes but it’s unknown if the movie sequel will be adapting it.
