The Spider-Verse trilogy — or at least the two-thirds of it that currently exist — has been groundbreaking in a lot of ways, but perhaps the boldest thing it ever did was something no animated movie (or, for that matter, live-action movie) had dared to do before: slap a literal “TO BE CONTINUED” at the end.
When I saw those words appear in the theater my reaction was “this is the only movie that could get away with it.” Across The Spider-Verse was so good I somehow didn’t mind. Of course, back then everyone thought the third and final movie would be out in less than a year. The original release date for Beyond The Spider-Verse was March 29, 2024.
But then a few things happened: it came out that the animators who worked on Across The Spider-Verse had been mistreated. The second film had been subjected to massive crunch and workers publicly said getting the final flick out by March was completely unreasonable. Then the SAG-AFTRA strike temporarily halted all work on Beyond period, making it impossible. It was removed from the Sony schedule in July of 2023, and has yet to return — Lord Miller promised an end to the turmoil behind the scenes and has vowed to “take the time necessary” to complete Beyond properly.
So…this is what that looks like. It’s almost 2025 and there’s still not even a hint of Beyond The Spider-Verse in the air, but at least we now know who the directors are. Sony announced today that Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are directing the film — Persichetti co-directed the first movie and served as executive producer on the second, while Thompson was a production designer on them both.
“Bob and Justin’s fingerprints are woven into the DNA of these films, and their passion for Miles’ journey shines through in every frame of his last adventure,” say producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller. “There is nothing more rewarding than collaborating with creative partners with bold vision and brilliant execution like Bob and Justin. We are thrilled to work with them once again to create a beautiful and satisfying conclusion to this story.”
As far as we know, these are the directors who have always been attached to the project. It’s also possible that they’re replacing someone else, but no one knows for sure, as the staff hasn’t really been revealed up to this point. We hope it’s the former, because the latter would mean we still have a loooong way to go. Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse still has no release date.
