This week’s Dan Da Dan was a bit of a changeup from previous episodes as the ghost/alien of the week was not hostile and the episode was mostly a light breather episode, with a focus on comedy and character development. Aira’s character growth was a particular highlight of this episode. Without further ado, let’s recap the events of this episode.
The episode begins with our leads being given school tracksuits after losing their clothes in the big battle last episode. We can check off the cliche of characters in anime tracksuits now. The school nurse happens to be a dominatrix, fitting with this show’s usual sense of humor. She comedically whips a coworker in a typical scene of Dan Da Dan humor. Okarun then explains his theory about why aliens are after those with those with ghost powers like Aira and him. His theory is that ghost, yokai, and other supernatural beings protect earth from alien invasion and that human/yokai hybrids are used as guinea pigs to figure out the weakness of these spirits.
The lead characters then discuss how they are going to go about explaining their humiliating exposure last episode. Their cover story was that Momo and Aira got into a fight, and Momo forcibly stripped Aira during their fight. Surprisingly, Momo is okay with this explanation, as she claims she doesn’t care about her reputation. Okarun finally explains the major misunderstanding of what happened two episodes ago and the two appear to be patching things up. Momo’s classmates show up in the nurse’s office to state their theory on what happened. They believe that Momo and Aira were doing a naked wrestling match over Okarun.
The next scene involves Aira displaying her growth as a character. Instead of going through with the cover story, Aira confesses that she had been lying about Momo and spreading rumors about her. Momo later asks her how it went with the cover story and she figures out that Aira didn’t go along with the cover story. They won’t admit a new fondness for each other, but it is apparent that these enemies are starting on what looks to be an eventual path to friendship.
Suddenly, one of the aliens from last week appears, only this one is too weak to fight. Our heroes pity their former enemy take him to Momo’s house and show him to Seiko, who doesn’t believe in aliens. She is absolutely convinced that the alien is actually a kappa and denies the existence of aliens. The alien tells a sad story, albeit one with standard Dan Da Dan scatological humor, of his child having a health problem that causes him to need a blood transfusion every time he poops or pees. It turns out that Seiko noticed something about the alien’s scent that allows her to help said alien. It turns out that the alien’s blood is similar to milk and that milk can be used in lieu of blood. Seiko says she knows a farmer who can donate a cow for the alien and the alien accepts this offer. The alien flies off in his spaceship and Seiko continues to deny the existence of aliens. It appears that the episode’s title was a little misleading, as there is no cattle mutilation in this episode.
Because the leads had their uniforms damaged in last episode’s big battle, they beg Seiko to help them pay for new uniforms because they are broke. She agrees to help Aira and Okarun, but only conditionally does for Momo to lead to another comedic bit. Seiko forces Momo to answer the door doing an impersonation of Seiko’s favorite television character. The boy answering the door turns out to be Momo’s childhood crush and an obvious romantic rival to Okarun. This character’s big reveal ends the episode.
Let’s see if this character serves any other purpose other than to be hated by the audience, as is common with male romantic rival characters in a shonen series.
