Just When You Thought You’d Heard The Last From Attack On Titan…

Every time I figure I’ve written my last piece for Attack On Titan, the rights holders think of some other way to drag it out. This anime aired its definitive final episode last year; a task it dragged its feet on for as long as possible, but eventually got done. These folks really have to accept that the show is gone and they have to find some other way of making money.

Or maybe not. They’ve managed to pull ONE last trick out of their hat: the omnibus movie. There’s a recent trend of anime shows sewing significant episodes together and repackaging them as feature films: The Looney Looney Looney Solo Leveling Movie, Chainsaw Man In Fantastical Island, DanDaDan’s Quackbusters, you get the idea. So did Attack On Titan. They just announced THE LAST ATTACK, a presentation of the last two plus-sized episodes as one giant-size big-screen experience.

Plot is the same. Humanity is making one last stand as a hero has turned into a villain and Eren Yeager now wants to destroy everything. “Eren plots the ‘Rumbling,’ a terrifying plan to eradicate every living thing in the world,” reads the synposis. “With the fate of the world hanging in the balance, a motley crew of Eren’s former comrades and enemies scramble to halt his deadly mission. The only question is, can they stop him?

Sometimes omnibus movies throw in something extra like refined animation or something no one’s seen before. DanDaDan’s omnibus premiered before the actual show did, and the Solo Leveling Season 1 omnibus was followed by a sneak preview of the first two episodes of Season 2. Attack On Titan has….nothing, really. It’s just the last two episodes again. It remains to be seen how many will turn out for this, but Crunchyroll is betting big by opening it globally.

Attack On Titan: The Last Attack was directed by Yûichirô Hayashi from an original story by Hajime Isayama. Tomohiro Kishi served as character designer under art direction by Kuniaki Nemoto. Daisuke Niinuma was Chief Animation Directior. Editing was done by Masato Yoshitake, the music was by KOHTA YAMAMOTO and Hiroyuki Sawano, and the animation and produced by MAPPA. AOT comes back one last time (it IS the last time, right?) in 2025.
