As one of the most iconic “Saturday Morning”/”Weekday Afternoon” cartoons of the late 90’s/early 2000’s era of kids programming, there’s always going to be a desire to watch reruns of Pokemon. For people that just want to watch Pokemon (legally, and free), there was a service called “Pokemon TV”. The streaming service originally premiered as a website in November, 2010, eventually becoming an app which was available on iOS, Android, Smart TVs (and even on the Nintendo Switch starting in 2021!). Unfortunately, the app shut down back in March of this year.
Today, Pokemon Company International revealed they’re bringing “Pokemon TV” back, and this time as a Youtube Channel! The channel is somewhat “bare bones” at the moment, as it only featured the first 5 episodes of the original “Indigo League” (aka Season 1) at first – though new episodes have been added over the last few hours. Still, if this truly is the revival of “Pokemon TV”, look for many more episodes (from multiple seasons) to be uploaded in the weeks and months ahead!
Here’s the iconic first episode:
Having episodes on a Youtube channel is arguably much more accessible than downloading an app to your phone (and Youtube is much more accessible on TV’s these days).
This isn’t the only way to watch legal Pokemon via streaming. Netflix is the home to newest episodes, including the ongoing “Pokemon Horizon” series (the first “Pokemon” series to go beyond Ash Ketchum’s adventures), though it also has the recent “Pokemon Journeys” series (and the first 52 episodes of the original “Indigo League” as well). Meanwhile, those with an “Amazon Prime” have access to multiple seasons from the last 25+ years of Pokemon, ranging from the early years when it was on Kids WB, to when the series aired on Cartoon Network (and later on Disney XD). It’s not complete access though – for instance, the lesser known “Orange Islands” arc (aka Season 2) is not available on Amazon Prime – unless you upgrade your Prime Subscription to include an additional “Pokemon” subscription (for an extra $2.99 a month).
But all of those are “paid” subscription streaming services. With this new Youtube Channel, it’s good to just have access to free (and legal!) episodes of Pokemon on the internet!
