We’ve got approximately one month remaining until Sonic The Hedgehog 3 opens in theaters. Paramount pulled a rather clever bit of marketing recently where they sent members of the press a Genesis cartridge that displayed screens and promo images from the movie when you inserted it into the classic console. It didn’t take long for someone to discover a secret code that would display the date of the next trailer’s release. And as the cart promised, here it is.
As we’ve covered already, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 will introduce Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic’s edgy doppelganger, to the movie canon. Though Shadow has the appearance of a Xeroxed Sonic, he’s never had it quite as easy. Sonic had no problem finding friends on Earth once he got here, but Shadow’s solitary pal, a little girl named Maria, tragically died and Shadow couldn’t save her.
Ever since then he’s been surly and destructive, and can only be contained in a top-secret facility — which he just broke free from. And now he’s got a gun! (Well….a laser gun, looks like. The Sega of 2024 isn’t as permissive as the Sega of 2005.)
The curious thing is that the previous trailer, released in August, suggested Sonic and friends would have to team up with Robotnik to defeat Shadow. This one suggests no such thing, displaying scenes of Eggman, Daddy Eggman, and Shadow working together to destroy the Earth. Which trailer is more accurate? We have a month until we find out.
By the way, don’t be fooled by all the talk about “the end” in this video. Director Jeff Fowler told EW.com a couple weeks ago there WILL be a stinger at the end of Sonic 3 teasing a possible Sonic 4. Nothing’s ever a trilogy anymore. But after Tails, Knuckles and Shadow, what reveal is left that could hit as hard? Not Amy (despite the size of her hammer).
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 stars the return of Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaunghnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as the trio’s Earth “parents.” New to the cast are Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Cristo Fernández (Ted Lasso), Jorma Taccone (Lonely Island), Alyla Browne (Mad Max Furiosa), James Wolk (Harley Quinn), Sofia Pernas (Jane The Virgin), and of course, Keanu Reeves as Shadow. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 opens December 26.
