I did all I could as one person to spread the word about Scavengers Reign. I wrote multiple articles on this website about the show’s existence, how unique and well-crafted it was, and how it deserved attention. I streamed the entire show a second time when Max passed on it and sent it to Netflix. I tried my hardest to make that red “Top 10” icon appear on the logo box, but it never materialized.
And now I’m hearing Netflix has passed on a second season as well, which though not surprising, is still disappointing. I’ll admit some of the show’s squeamish scenes aren’t for everyone, but in case you haven’t noticed, body horror has NOT been a deterrent for success in Hollywood lately!
The word came directly from co-creator Joseph Bennett, who said on his Instagram account “As of right now, Scavengers Reign is not being renewed for a second season. I wanted to let everyone know directly because I really love our fanbase, they’ve been such champions for the show, and I don’t want to leave everyone hanging.”
“We’ve had to fight tooth and nail every step of the way to get this show made, starting all the way back in 2016 with the Scavengers short film to the release of the first season last year. It’s a case study for believing in something and persevering through a million and one hurdles. But, it got made, thanks especially to so many people who supported it along the way, in big and small ways.”
Then he pulled out a surprise: a reel for Season 2?? Well, it’s a concept reel created at Titmouse to use as a pitching aid for any interested parties. Still, it exists, and even if this is all we get of Scavengers Reign Season 2, at least it’s something.
This isn’t a series of concept paintings or half-finished animatics. This looks as good as the show did. Some of the scenes are explained (that spacecraft with the skulls on it obviously belongs to those marauders we met in the closing seconds of Season One) and some may never be explained at all (what’s with Ursula and the plant pod thing?) Also, there’s a beast of burden you have to command by crawling inside it and bopping its guts — a few seconds of that is better than nothing.
Will we ever see more? Maybe not, but if Scavengers Reign really was too good for this ungrateful planet, we at least have this glimpse of what could’ve been.
