Cartoon Network Releases New “Over The Garden Wall” Stop-Motion Animated Short

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Over the Garden Wall, Cartoon Network and Aardman Animations have released a new stop-motion animated short, which can be seen below in the article.

Over the Garden Wall premiered in November 2014 on the Cartoon Network. Created by Patrick McHale, the animated mini-series is composed of only 10 segments (meaning, around 2 and a half hours of content), but has left a considerable impact on animation fans since it’s debut. Following the adventures of two half-brothers, Wirt and Greg as they travel through a mysterious forest aptly named the Unknown. There they have several bizarre experiences while trying to find their way home. The episodes originally aired daily (2 segments per day), for the week of November 3-7, 2014.

Using a rather unique art style and an intriguing story line, featuring a nice mix of humor and horror, as well as suitable music composed by the Blasting Company, Over the Garden Wall was a successful enough project that kept the audience tuned in, and has become sort of s staple for the Cartoon Network as they usually re-run the episodes every year in the Fall. This year is no exception, and it’s 10th anniversary is an even bigger occasion for it to air. On a sadder note, the mini-series was among the titles that – for various reasons – was removed from the Max streaming platform last year. The DVD releases have also been out of print for a while, though on the bright side, it can be still streamed thanks to Hulu, and can be purchased digitally from Prime Video.

The mini-series was also successful in the eyes of critics, and was nominated for various awards over the years, even winning Emmy Awards (for Outstanding Animated Program, and for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, awarded to Nick Cross, the art director), as well as a Reuben Award for TV Animation, and it was named “Best Animated Feature” at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in 2015. It should also be noted McHale’s original short film, “Tome of the Unknown”, which basically acted as a pilot to this mini-series, likewise earned a couple of awards and obviously it had a positive reception, considering it lead to the creation of Over the Garden Wall.

Over the Garden Wall starred Elijah Wood and Collin Dean as Wirt and Greg, respectively; Melanie Lynskey as Beatrice the bluebird, and Christopher Lloyd as the Woodsman. Other actors included in the cast list were Tim Curry, Bebe Neuwirth, Chris Isaak, Shirley Jones, Thomas Lennon, Jack Jones, Jerron Paxton, John Cleese and Samuel Ramey.

As it was released to the general public (on Youtube), here’s the 10th Anniversary special:

Over the Garden Wall remains probably the most successful mini-series the Cartoon Network has produced, with maybe the Adventure Time mini-series a close second. It is still a fan favorite that will likely continue to be revered for years to come.
