Out of all the Christmases Sir Santa Christopher Kringle Claus has ever lorded over, there is one that stands out in his mind. It’s the one where so many things went wrong he shudders to even think about it. He can only refer to it as….THAT Christmas.
It’s the title of Netflix’s next animated holiday movie, set to release in December. Exactly why this Christmas was so bad for Santa is unexplained here (they don’t tell us why he has just one reindeer either). All the description says is that the incident involved an innocent mistake and “an enormous number of turkeys.”
But it’s not just Santa that’s having a bad time. The movie is described as an interwoven string of stories following the holiday woes of several different groups of people, though they all appear to live on the same street. That street is dead center for a horrible blizzard. The people who are trapped inside their homes are grumpy about it, but they don’t have it half as bad as the group who were driving back, got swept in the wind and are now trapped upside-down in their car!
That Christmas stars the voices of Brian Cox as Santa, Guz Khan as Dasher, Fiona Shaw as Ms. Trapper, Jodie Whittaker as Mrs. Williams, Lolly Adefope as Mrs. McNutt, Alex Macqueen as Mr. Forrest, Katherine Parkinson as Mrs. Forrest, Sindhu Vee as Mrs. Mulji, India Brown as Bernadette, Zazie Hayhurst as Sam, Sienna Sayer as Charlie, Jack Wisniewski as Danny, Rosie Cavaliero as Mrs. Beccles, Paul Kaye as Yirrell, Andy Nyman as Mr. Beccles, Kuhu Agarwal as Nisha, Bronte Smith as Eve, Freddie Spry as Teddy, Ava Talbot as Scarlett, Bill Nighy as Bill and Rhys Darby as Mr. McNutt.
As far as Netflix’s animated Christmas movies go it’s doubtful they’ll ever top their first attempt, Klaus, a charming tale beautifully animated in 2D with a computer-guided shading technique that Netflix patented and then never used again. This Christmas has a more generic look to it, and there isn’t much we see here that sets it apart. It’ll be up to the writing to make it memorable. It debuts on Netflix December 4.
