Krypto The Super Dog Revealed For James Gunn’s “Superman”

Yesterday it was revealed that the beloved super-dog canine “Krypto the Super Dog” will appear in DC Studios & Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming film, “Superman” from writer/director James Gunn. The film will serve as the “true start” of the DC Universe, with 2005’s “All-Star Superman” by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely as its inspiration. The film will feature an all-star ensemble cast led by faces such as David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult. Gunn made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter):

Gunn revealed the inspiration for Krypto in this film was his pet dog Ozu. Ozu was adopted by Gunn when he started writing and pitching the film to Warner Bros. sometime after the formation of Warner Bros. Discovery, and came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs. When Ozu arrived into his life, he almost destroyed his home and started biting his laptop, his shoes, and furniture. As Ozu changed his life, Gunn implemented Krypto into the script and changed the shape of the story of “Superman”. The announcement of Krypto into “Superman” coincides with “Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog” month, in which major animal welfare and rescue organizations such as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (APSCA) and American Humane celebrate the importance and benefits of adopting a shelter dog.

As for Krypto, he was first introduced in the first story of 1955’s “Adventure Comics #210”, “The Super-Dog from Krypton” by Otto Binder. During the story, Superboy discovers a Kryptonian rocket ship and learns that the dog was sent here by Jor-El, which was later knocked-off by an asteroid during his journey to Earth. Krypto would later appear in multiple incarnations of the DC universe as a companion to the Superman family and received appearances in film and TV adaptations such as the 1966 Filmation series, “The Adventures of Super Boy”, the 2005 Warner Bros. Animation series, “Krypto the Super Dog”, and was the titular character in the studio’s 2022 animated feature “DC League of Super-Pets”, with Dwayne Johnson playing the character.

Look forward to July 2025 as Krypto plays an important “paw-some” part to the story of “Superman”.
