Special “Lazarus” Sneak Peak Coming To New York Comic Con

When it comes to televised anime, Shinichiro Watanabe is generally considered to be the greatest director in the history of the medium and his magnum opus, Cowboy Bebop is considered by many to be the greatest anime television series of all time. His other enduring classics, Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy were also essential cornerstones of Adult Swim’s anime programming. It has been a few years since his last project, 2019’s beloved Carol and Tuesday, but soon, possibly 2025, the king of anime will release a new major project. Shinichiro Watanabe is teaming up with MAPPA, yes, the studio behind megahits Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, to work on his newest project Lazarus. Those going to New York Comic Con, running October 17-20, can be expected a special sneak preview of this highly anticipated show.

The world of “Lazarus”

The Lazarus panel will include Shinichiro Watanabe himself, as well as Executive Producer Jason Demarco, and producers Joseph Chou and Takenari Maeda. The official synopsis for Lazarus is:

“The year is 2052 an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity prevails across the globe. The reason for this: mankind has been freed from sickness and pain. Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner has developed a miracle cure-all drug with no apparent drawbacks called Hapuna. Three years later, the world has moved on. But Dr. Skinner has returned this time, as a harbinger of doom. Skinner announces that Hapuna has a short half-life. Everyone who has taken it will die approximately three years later. Death is coming for this sinful world and coming soon. As a response to this threat, a special task force of 5 agents is gathered from across the world to save humanity from Skinner’s plan. This group is called ‘Lazarus.’ Can they find Skinner and develop a vaccine before time runs out?”

Lazarus will premiere on Adult Swim and stream on Max the next day. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
